PANYL is a line of do-it-yourself finishes for customizing IKEA furniture and other custom home-improvement projects. You install it by peeling back the lining paper and applying gentle pressure to make the PANYL stick. PANYL is a fast, convenient and cost-effective way to take advantage of mass-produced "flat-pack" furniture while achieving the high-end look of custom, made-to-order brands (or at least completely obscuring the fact that there's regular old IKEA underneath).
PANYL is made of self-adhesive, pressure-sensitive vinyl that is specifically designed for interior and exterior architectural use.
PANYL is either pre-cut to the dimensions of specific IKEA furniture models, custom cut to dimensions you specify, or delivered as a roll of uncut material. PANYL is thicker and more rigid than contact paper or wallpaper. It also has a network of grooves in the adhesive underside, which allows air to escape as it's applied. This makes it very easy for anyone to apply it smoothly and evenly without bunching or air bubbles.
If you can fold a paper airplane or wrap a present, you can install PANYL. We provide simple installation instructions and practice pieces with each order. The material itself is very forgiving in that it can be peeled off and repositioned multiple times as you are applying it, and because it has specially engineered air channels on the adhesive side that make it extremely easy to remove air bubbles and achieve a hard, uniform surface.
Smaller surfaces are the easiest to PANYL, while doing larger ones (such as wardrobe doors) requires a little initial practice, as does wrapping corners. However, we include practice PANYLs with every order.
PANYL is a high-end architectural finish that is engineered to last. Colors and textures will not fade or smudge. If properly cleaned and maintained PANYL can last as long as the furniture it's stuck to.
Once applied, PANYL acts as an extra waterproof barrier between your furniture surface and contact with liquid. However, it will not stick to wet or waterlogged surfaces, and it will not prevent moisture from being absorbed through unfinished ends or unprotected edges.
Yes. PANYL is a Class A fire retardant when applied to a surface.
You can use almost any household cleaner on PANYL, but avoid using abrasives such as Ajax or steel wool, which may leave scratches. For tougher ink stains use denatured alcohol. You can even remove marks made with a Sharpie.
As long as the original surface was not dirty or wet, and no excess PANYL protrudes at the edges, PANYL won't peel, and is engineered to adhere for at least 10 years indoors.
PANYL is scratch resistant and very durable. However, if proper care is not taken when installing, cleaning or removing it, it may scratch or tear. PANYL should not be used on cutting surfaces or come in contact with anything sharp. PANYL is heat and fire-resistant, but contact with hot items or flame can potentially damage it. Care for it as you would for any other item with a custom finish, and it will maintain its original appearance.
Yes, however the potential to cause damage to the original surface varies depending on the original finish. The harder and thicker the original finish, the less PANYL is likely to damage it if removed. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the least damageable and 1 being the most, glass or polished metal would be a 10, and wallpaper or drywall would be 1. Everything else is in the middle.
Before removing PANYL it's important to assess the finish of the underlying surface. Certain IKEA items have a solid, smooth shell that resists chipping or peeling. Others, such as the Billy bookcase series or Harlig kitchen cabinet doors have only thin melamine or veneer finish. MALM and BESTA have an even less robust, painted surface that flakes or tears easily, and Expedit doors and drawers have an impregnated paper surface that can peel off in their entirety if you don't take precautions. Care must be taken to gently and evenly heat the PANYL with a hair dryer before slowly and evenly peeling off the material. Otherwise flecks or even sections of melamine can peel off as you remove the PANYL.
Notwithstanding, PANYL can usually be removed from any these surfaces without damaging the original finish. See the explanation in the INSTALLATION section for further details. And if you are ever in doubt or experience a problem, simply stop what you are doing and contact us so we can provide guidance.
Yes it does! Have a look at our guide to wrapping side edges and corners.
We do NOT sell IKEA items or replacements for IKEA items. PANYL only sells flexible, self-adhesive finishes that you use to customize your new or existing IKEA furniture.
Samples are 2 ½ x 3 inch swatch cards for the purpose of demonstrating color and texture. With every sample order, we also include at least one larger piece of material with the backing in place, so that you can examine the adhesive side and test the application.
The short answer: NO!!!
The long answer:
The photographic content on our site shows actual PANY, although product images have been digitally manipulated to display the various patterns. While we invest tremendous effort to represent PANYL in its true-to-life form, no color will look alike on two different computer screens. The only way to know what a given PANYL pattern actually looks like is to physically see it. We highly encourage you to order samples to help you make the best choice.
If any of the items in your order do not match the color samples that you previously received, simply <href="http://www.panyl.com/pages/contact-us">for a free replacement.
YES! Although we are continually adding new IKEA products to our site, there are far too many for us to display all of them. If you don't see your item, please contact us and be sure to include a link to the item on the IKEA website, a description of which parts you would like to PANYL and which PANYL patterns you want. We will respond by e-mail with a price quote.
Custom orders are priced by taking the total number of linear feet required to cut out all of the requested PANYLs in a given color, plus a flat cut fee of $6 for each custom PANYL in the order. Use a millimeter measuring tape to take accurate measurements of the length and width of each of the surfaces you plan to PANYL. Determine based on these measurements how long a sheet of four-foot wide material is needed to cut out all of the shapes you require. Factor in a border of at least a quarter inch around each shape.
When you have determined the correct number of feet you need to order based on the dimensions of the shapes you need cut, place an order for PANYL by-the-foot in the appropriate quantity of linear feet and the desired number of shapes.
IMPORTANT: Include a note in your cart listing the exact dimensions in millimeters for each PANYL you want cut, as well as the desired direction of any woodgrains. We will contact you if we need any additional information to complete your order.
PANYL can be ordered in any desired number of linear feet. A linear foot is 1 foot long by 4 feet wide. Order any length of material in 1 foot increments up to 165 feet - the length of an entire factory roll.
Make a diagram with all of the pieces you need arranged in a four-foot high row. This height corresponds to the factory width of the material. Make sure you include at least a quarter of an inch of empty space in between shapes, as well as between the shapes and the edges of the row. Order the number of linear feet necessary to allow all of shapes to be cut.
Keep in mind that all woodgrain patterns are oriented in the long direction. Thus, for horizontal woodgrains the maximum width is four feet.
The paper backing will have arrows pointing in the "up" direction. Apply your PANYL from the top down. For doors and drawers with knobs, make sure the hole on your surface is positioned correctly, before you begin application. This is especially important for woodgrains, which are unidirectional. If you want a horizontal orientation for your woodgrains or textured patterns, rotate your door or drawer 90 degrees and start from the side edge.
Don't worry about small bubbles. Panyl is specially designed to allow air to escape - gently smooth them out as you lay the PANYL onto the surface, and watch them disappear!
Large air bubbles or creases may be too large to smooth out. You can easily avoid these by allowing the PANYL to make contact with the surface a little at a time. If you do create a large bubble or crease, gently pull the PANYL away from the surface until the bubble is gone, and proceed normally.
PANYL's adhesive is engineered to be pressure sensitive. It won't fully stick to the surface until you've smoothed it down. If you notice you are drifting out of line with your surface, reposition your PANYL and start again.
For small creases, position a hot blow dryer 10-12 inches away from the spot for for a few seconds, and gently smooth the creases with your fingers or a felt pad.
PANYL's pressure-sensitive adhesive only starts to "cure" after you have smoothed it down, and isn't fully cured until about 24 hours later. To remove PANYL during installation, peel off a corner, and pull back slowly and evenly so that you are applying reverse pressure to the entire release front at once. Otherwise you may stretch or deform the sheet, making it harder to lay down flat again.
For permanent removal, always pay careful attention to the hardness of the original finish (see "Is PANYL removeable, above). When in doubt, just go slowly, use plenty of heat, and call us if you are in doubt, preferably BEFORE you decide to wing it. The thinner and softer the finish, the slower and more gently you must pull, and the more thoroughly you need to heat as you go. Before you begin peeling, heat the entire PANYLed surface thoroughly and gently with a hair dryer. Then release from a corner, and slowly lift the PANYL up at a 30-45-degree angle. Hold the hair dryer 2-3 inches from the PANYL as you pull. Heat the side covered by the PANYL with one hand, and pull up slowly and gently with the other. Once the material becomes very soft and pliable, you can remove it from even the weakest surfaces with hardly any risk of damage. Pull up a small area, then stop and peel an adjacent or nearby spot. You will quickly figure out how much heat to use and how hard to pull. But always be diligent, because pulling a little too hard, in the one cold spot you forgot to heat, can be the difference between having your cake and eating it, or heading back to the cart for a new batch, permanent batch of PANYL.
Use these guidelines if you intend to remove PANYL at some point, and if you are ever in doubt or if you run into trouble, contact us before you proceed any further.
Occasionally a small spec of dust may remain on your surface and become stuck to the underside of the PANYL you are applying. Avoid this by wiping your surfaces clean before application, and do it in a clean work space. However if this does happen, cut a small square from the practice sheet that came with your order. Peel back the PANYL and press the adhesive side of your practice square against the dust particle so that the dust particle is transferred to the practice square. Repeat when necessary.
This is normal. Each PANYL is cut to fit just inside the edge banding of flat-pack doors and drawers. This makes it easier to align your PANYL and also protects its edges from dents and dings. We recommend using black/dark surfaces whenever possible, this will make any small borders virtually unnoticeable. Also keep in mind that small borders are even less noticeable in larger installations where you've got multiple surfaces next to each other.
